Sorry for the long hiatus. but finally i'm back! Summer had been long but not entirely uneventful but alas uni has to commence. My summer updates will be trickling in occasionally partly due to me forgetting most of what i did (too bad i don't keep a diary for it) and my slightly hectic schedule.
Just a couple of nominal updates, my summer had been full of travelling around malaysia (not something i initially envisioned nor does it bring a wow compared to lets say backpacking in europe or something. NOnetheless travelling is as travelling is-fun. i won't go laboriously detail into my day to day endevours since it will bore the death out of anyone reading this.
Also, i've been back in london for more than a month already. no more halls for me =). i'm renting place with 4 of my mates (brings back the memories of mcnair though it's no longer 5 to a room). NOw it's 5 to a house! pricey? not exactly though it's far as hell from my uni. the upside is now i can use the tube without thinking about my wallet. i don't really care whether it's from leicester squre to baker street or turnpike lane to wood green i just hop on and see whether it takes me home.
my other resolution for this year is to travel more -not for Model UNs or anything academic related but more like a backpacking thing. Seems ideal to do it now since london is becoming more routine for me (albeit post strikes and BNP debates still perk me up a bit). so far, slovakia, austria and possibly some east european country has been penned down in my calender. Maybe Czech or denmark will be next. who knows... for those arsenal fans i'm very close to emirates so if you want any memorabilia just give me a buzz(of course requests must be reasonable. getting the entire arsenal squads' signature on liverpool's beachball will get a =S reaction from me).
with great power comes great responsibility. what on earth am i supposed to do this 3-4 months?? with no activities planned whatsoever travelling may just be my only option (though i'm not complaining at all if you get my slant :P). anyway i have almost 40 GB of videos to keep me busy for a couple of weeks not to mention the opportunity to learn "guo yu". (thanks to siaw jing) i know i'll be bugging someone for translations. LOL.
After my exams, reading books and studying were at the back of my mind (till the next term at least). At first i was wondering to myself. Where should i go? edinburgh? or maybe further like prague, dublin or even rome. But in the end i settled for London. Although i have stayed here for almost a year, i haven't thoroughly explored it so why not visit my own "backyard" before others.
London did not disappoint. From trafalgar square to wimbledon and from greenwich to wembley stadium. There were so many things to see and do. Museums took more than a day to finish seeing as their splendour could not be easily described in words. For instance, the natural history museum itself had 3 to 4 zones and i could only finish 2 sub zones in a couple of hours.
Travelling around london is indeed satisfying but without good company it wouldn't be complete. Siaw Jing came over and with junyi as well as my current coursemates, i managed to cover a lot of ground. Not only did we go to famous stadia like emirates, stamford bridge and wembley (i know that craven cottage, white hart lane and several other stadium are also enshrined within london but their grandeur pales in comparison with wembley) we also also went to other major sporting grounds like wimbledon and lords cricket grounds.
For non sport enthusiasts, there are still plenty to do here. For art lovers, there is tate modern, the british national art gallery and british art museum to name a few. THe architecture along thames is also very beautiful to admire beginning with mayor Boris Johnson's office to tower bridge (be careful not to confuse this with london bridge). Feeling bored of all the art? why not have a nice evening watching a musical? Don't think that musicals are only for the aristocrats with plenty of money to spare (like buying kaka for 56million). Musicals are very down to earth and intriguing to watch. not only are the songs nice, most stories have interesting plots. Mamma mia, wicked, phantom of the opera, lion king and priscilla to name a few are wonderful musicals that connects to you on a whole new level.
London has much more to offer than just that though time isn't on my side this time. the only consolation is the 2 more years i have left. Time really flies. 1 year down 2 more to go...
After a tremendously long easter break coupled with 7 exams spread over a period of 1 month, it is finally going to end. With almost 2 months of "hitting the books" summer break is again in sight bearing cheer to most students. ironically enough, uni life is so full of holidays that it really makes me wonder how reliable a transition it is to real life.
To clarify things let's list what we do in uni that will rarely occur while working 1) mugging unless you want to work and get a part time MBA 2) being carefree 3) no need to worry about expenses too much 4) get 5 months of annual leave 5) work (in uni ppl think of working part time to gain income but after treading into the workplace, people look for the opposite)
The past 2 months have been very carefree for me. Other than studying for exams, there seemed to be nothing else to do. Travelling seemed out of the question while cca's have all ended. Hopefully all this will change in a week or two.
